316 carb problems

Post by quinn_656 »

Men
My uncle bought a saphire blue 316 at the weekend real good shell but with the usual e21 problems i.e. the the rotten jacking points etc but unmolested and garaged most of its later life.

first thing i want to do is to get it running and especially idling on the button. the engine starts no problem and sounds real healthy but it wont idle on its own you have to keep giving it throttle although i think it will idle on the choke when it is cold.

the carb is a peirburg

anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Willy

When you say just get a weber do you mean convert it to side drafts or is their a direct replacement weber for the pierburg that i can rob off something else?? i am under the impression that this is a common fault on the 316!

Direct replacement. You'll want a Weber 32/34 DMTL (think it needs an adapter plate with it for an M10 too). Mark had one for sale not long ago.

It seems to be the universally recommended upgrade. Gets you a few more horsies, better fuel economy (if you drive 'normally' :launch ) and is generally more reliable.

You can also fit twins;

Do the air flow valve and the set thermo actuator (nr 5 and 18) click when you make contact?

Ah yes, I didn't think of the fact the 316 could have another Pierburg.

Just checking to see if you were paying attention! :wink:
