Single headlight conversion, what's needed
After looking at pictures of E21's all the time im starting to like the single light style more than the doubles. Other than the grills, what do i need for the conversion ? I take it i cant use the original twin lamps at all ?
What parts in total will i need to do this job and will i have to fiddle about with the wiring ?
If anyone has the gear for sale btw i would be interested. Cheers

Re: Single headlight conversion, what's needed
Apart from good taste the singles simply bolt straight in on the same sort of metal frame as holds twins. It's 3 or 4 10mm bolts iirc? Then wire the single plugs for bulbs.
Re: Single headlight conversion, what's needed
single headlamp cars (316/318) have a different fuse box which will only let either the main or high beam to be on at one time . A double headlight fuse box used with single headlights will allow both fillaments in the one headlight bulb to be on together and the bulb is likely to die quickly from the heat if you drive with high beam lights (and main beam)on for any lenght of time....edd

So i can use the bulbs from my twins in the single grills then i need to connect the wiring together to fit onto a single/double fillament bulb ?
Do the single grills not take a larger diameter bulb ? Cheers

No, the lights themselves are bigger its just the frame that holds them simply bolts straight in if you can find OE ones. If not, try Golf crosshairs.

Oooo, do golf ones fit ? Might be able to pinch some from my mate. What do you have to do to the wires then ? Just chop em and solder'em back as one ? Ta
ps, do you mean i need the metal brackets as well as the grills and bulbs then ?

Yeah. If you give me a day or so I can photograph all the bits you need. The headlamps themselves are NLA, which is why I tend to hang on to them, but the Golf ones are probably the easiest to make fit. They're pretty cheap too.

There we go. The 3 bolts just hold the metal frame that supports the light unit itself.

Cheers. Do you mean they bolt straight to the car instead of having the cup/bracket things on the doubles ?

Re: Single headlight conversion, what's needed
Yes, the 3 bolts are in the same place. It's literally 30 seconds to unbolt the twins and the same to bolt in singles. The longest job is wiring in the single plugs for the bulbs and even that isn't rocket science.
