HELP! Engine starting problems

The problem is, if my car has been left for example over night, its very difficult to get it started.

When i turn the ignition to fire it over, it just ticks over with lots of bangs and pops. Eventually after about 5-10mins of this, the engine eventually turns over, sometimes i can be revving the engine once started to about 4000rpm and then the engine will cut out, and the process starts again until it starts.

but the thing is once its started and iv drove it, the engine runs sweet. it is also my everyday car

Iv checked the plugs iv cleaned the carb out, everything looks fine, no blockages. pipes have been cleaned out.

A friend of mine says it seems like the fuel is draining back out of the carb once left over night.

Sounds like fuel pump might be failing or a blacked fuel filter maybe?
