Haha, just had the same problem. Do you have a multimeter for measuring voltage, current and resistance? Then check all the voltages and resistance between the engine, chassis and battery. !!When checking the resistance disconnect the battery!!

Otherwise, just disconnect the cable between the engine and chassis, clean it and reconnect it. And of course, try again.

Secondly, on the starter are two bolts with big cables on it. But there is also a smaller cable, this is the control signal from turning the key. Put a lead on this small connector and on the + of the battery, it should start.

When it doesn't try tapping on the motor. This should especially work when you get current on the motor and tap at the same moment. Put current on the motor for as short as possible! When this helps, start looking for a new starter or a second hand one to overhaul it.

It is very easy to measure it, then you know it for sure. Put the multimeter on Voltage and DC, select 0-20V and put one probe on the engine and one probe on the plus of the battery, it should give the same reading as when you measure both poles of the battery. When you measure the engine and that is less then the battery, you might have an earthing problem.

But when you have no earth cable, the car will never start.

I don't know where it is on a 323i, but on the four cilinder models the cable is between the left side (accu side) of the engine and the chassis.

Like I said, just been through the same ;) So it would be stupid if I kept the knowledge for myself.
