Engine swap, who?

Post by silver-stue21 »

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking about swapping out my M10 engine for either an M20 325i or M42 318is but don't have the real expertise to do myself.

Any suggestions on anyone on the forum etc who i could speak to and an idea on approx labour costs involved?

Also will also need some light resto work on the engine bay while the engine is out.

:thnx

Stu

Nas is making a name for himself doing M50/M52 swaps on this forum, but I'm not sure he does M20 or M42 engines.

M20 will be easier than M42, it requires only bolt on parts from 320 or 323i. It is still likely to cost a lot in parts and labour, especially as the bolt on parts for the swap are getting expensive. Engine mounts, gearbox, front subframe, propshaft are the main bits needed.

M42 will require custom work.

Cheers Guys, i'm open to all engine options, M50/M52 could be cool providing it doesnt cost the earth, although i don't mind spending some money on something worthwhile as i've spent a bomb in the past of cars that depreciate and at least this will hold some value some degree depending on what choices i made!

I like the 1800 engine i have at present but even with the weber twin carb, it just doesnt feel that pokey!
