How does the Swedish exhaustcontrolsystem works?

Post by Peter V. »

Just a question.

Today i have been at Walter to have a look at his 323i. He has a E21 which is original a swedish car. In Sweden there is a system which measures the exhaustgasses and is then able to adjust the ignitiontiming of the engine. This is done by the vacuumhoses towards the inlet and the timingadjustment at the ignitiondevice.

Is there someone who knows the system or has some documentation of it?
Esspecially the working of the two temperatureswithes in the vacuumhoses which are mounted in the Thermostathousing?

Help is wanted!

Nope, but what I do know is that an EGR system often is a pain in the @ss and takes away a few horses as well. Better ditch if possible. But there must be a few over here than can help you out.

I have told to Walter indeed that we maybe remove this system but it is electrical connected with the ignitionmodule which is placed at the innerfender. I want to know if this would give any problems if it is not electrical connected anymore.

I've disconnected the EGR-system in my car recently. Thought there were a problem with some of the vacuum clocks by the water expansion tank, but its hard to know for sure because of this "complex" system.

I removed the vacuum clocks (2, 3, 6) the rev. counter relay (1), though I haven't removed the cables yet as you can see. You could just plug the thermo switches on the thermostat house but i let them be for now. The black vacuum hose from the distributor going to one of the thermo switches (green in my case) on the thermostat house, you shorten and connect IN FRONT of the throttle plate on the air intake. You basically bypass the thermo switches. On ordinary e21 this hose is hose is white and connected on top of the throttle, which is usually seen.
The rest of the stuff (11) and (12) you just remove and plug if you don't got the conventional intake and exhausts manifolds to replace them with.
Just make sure you plug all open connections so you don't get a air leak.
Maybe you get a better picture of the system and vacuum hose colors at RealOEM

My engine runs much better and smoother, though it judder a couple of second at 1500 rpm when slowing down with a gear in. Maybe it would help to check the ignition timing but i find it quite narrow and inconvenient for the moment(?).

Good luck!!
