Threat to Historic Vehicles

Post by TopCat »

Thought that this should be circulated on your Forum Jeroen as E21s are verging on being treated as Historic:

At the meeting of the Federation of Manx Historic Vehicle Clubs on Monday this week, there was extensive discussion on proposals being made by Government for 'additional roadworthiness tests on vehicles.'

Details of these proposals, together with a brief on line questionnaire style response form are available at http://www.gov.im/ConsultationDetail.gov?id=352

The questionnaire is very brief and misses many of the points made in the consultative document. You are advised to read the document to assess likely impact on most of the vehicles in our Clubs.

The Federation will be responding directly to the consultation and opposing the proposals. The meeting felt that the arguments presented in the document were very weak or fundamentally flawed.

It is hoped that you will circulate this information within your Club, and as many responses as possible from individuals will be made before the closing date of 1st February.

Ehm well, with many people taking a different approach to motoring than us enthusiasts, I'd say there is a huge risk. Quotes like these are clear and not unlikely: "vehicles more than 8 years old accounted for 25% of the fleet but had 50% of the serious defects"

So why not have a MOT? It's for the safety of all and in line with what is common throughout Europe and with reason. Yes, this will have impact and will consume time and money, but on a well maintained vehicle there won't be too much to worry about.

Of course, the annual MOT (bi-annual for cars over 30 yo) here is a nusance sometimes, but as long as tests are done with a clear focus on safety, that will have a positive effect on road safety and will also help you identify any risk issues at an early stage. Many people never see the bottom of the car and it can be good to know about bad brake lines or excessive rust a little before running into problems.

Apologies all - I posted before I read it!

Didn't realise it was just referring solely to IOM not UK!! So will not be of huge interest to everyone!
