Jim the engine came from Mark's beige 316 which I believe is scheduled to become the next MIB?

AS Nas said we finished the engine swap and I drove the car home from Leeds after a very tiring day in the snow and sub zero temps wrestling exhausts and props! Thanks to Nas for all his hard work. Engine runs sweet after the timing and carb were tuned a little, but did die 5 minutes from home (just glad it didn't happen half up the M62!). Believe the wiring on the alternator is at fault, gonna figure out today after I get back from the eye hospital... I've got an exhaust (or speck of one anyway) in my left eye! Use goggles people.

What was wrong with the existing engine - thought it had been rebuilt and had webers on it???

Eye hospital not likely to be fun if you have metal in, hopefully they won't use the drill!

Yes, the previous engine had a head rebuild approx 5 years ago but had some overheating issues, unsolved by rad/thermostat/waterpump replacement - showed low compression on all cylinders too, leading me to believe the head gasket was gone. In addition it was taking 10-15 seconds to build oil pressure on cold start and someone had sealed the sump with what looked like expanding window foam. Although it was still very much mobile, I thought it was best to tackle the problem sooner rather than later as all these issues combined didn't fill me with confidence. It had twin 40 dellortos, not webers.

The engine we just plopped in looks relatively unmolested. It was also a good opportunity to put in my rebuilt 5 speed and rebuilt weber32/34 DMTL. Fingers crossed for lower fuel bills. The clutch slave and master took the opportunity to fail simultaneously, and thankfully I had two spares on hand.

I see you've been getting out and about in the baur lately Jim - hopefully that will convince you not to sell! :-) And my eye is fixed. Nothing more than some magic numbing eye drops and a cotton bud, administered by a lovely nurse. I was in and out in ten minutes - five minutes to see the triage nurse, two minutes later I was being called in for speck removal! I do admit you had me sweating with that eye drill comment though. Big up the wonderful NHS!

Jeroen - Is it worth updating the gearbox types page with the info re later models of E21 being equipped with the shorter 5spd Getrag 240?
