Re: Never mind the trackday car

Managed to get the starter working today, dismantled the fusebox to investigate where the short that was sticking 12v down the starter wire was coming from. Chopped out some redundant wiring while I was there, it must have been water as it magically sorted itself out mid afternoon. Given it a thorough dose of GT85 and put it back together for now. Need to get the airbox etc back on so I can try starting.

Original starter was dead due to seized solenoid and the big wire rusting away. Never noticed there are two terminals on the solenoid, one is the one that fires it, the other - don't know what it does but that was the one I had connected the replacement starter to. So the replacement is fine and turns the engine over. I have two spares left, one is I thin an M20 one, but the other is going to be cleaned and refurbed ready for next time there's a problem.

While I was messing about with the wiring I have fitted a starter button so that I don't need to worry about the switch breaking. Might go all the way and put the ignition on a separate switch as well.

glad it wasnt anything too serious.. always a bonus when stuff fixes itself!

you may want to invest in a cover of some kind to stop the water getting in.

I'm going to tape up the holes in the bonnet for now, although weather looks OK so hopefully no rain coming. Then I'm going to shift two sets of MIMS, a set of minilites and a set of turbines out of the garage and drive the car back in. Only reason it's been stuck outside is that the brakes are stuck partially on by surface rust on the discs and I couldn't push it back up the slight slope into the garage by myself!

Sorry I never made it! The GF ended up spending 3 nights in Crumpsall and has only just made a full recovery. Turned out to be a chest infection.

Shame you couldn't get the slug out! I'll definitely come down for the next one if I can get it off work, just give me a shout. Any pics of the Baur on track? :-)
