A couple of "what have I done??" questions

Post by SileNceR »

Since I've stripped out most of the parts from my E21, a lot of time has passed (and I've moved house which means invariably things get lost or placed in the wrong boxes with the wrong things).

I've got a couple of questions; first relates to power steering and may only be able to be answered by those of you with RHD cars who have power steering (I am under the impression this is a very small amount of people) - can you check you car and advise which line is the high pressure line from the pump, and which is the low pressure line which runs from the reservoir on the strut tower?

The second - how does the sunroof normally seal? I've removed most of the interior trim and now if the car is out in the rain it just sorta pours in. I don't recall removing any trim or rubber seals specific to keeping rain out (or that had this obvious purpose) but as I've stated, parts of the interior were removed 2.5-3 years ago and so I can't ever be 100% certain! I can take photos of the mechanism if it helps?

The shorter over braided hose goes from the reservour to the pump. Then theres one back out the pump with a straight fitting to the rack and theres a braided line back to the reservour.

Theres only one rubber seal which goes around the sunroof edge (on the bit that moves) theres no seals on the actual roof.

Hope that helps.

@sunroof, correct. So during rain of washing of the car, lots of water goes into the sunroofcasing, drained by 4 hoses. The front two drain into the sills, so that's why a lot of sunroof E21's have very rotten sills.

Hi Nas80

main question is which of the two spots in the rack does the one directly from the pump connect to? is it the larger or smaller of the two?

I can check later on tonight - I have a power steering rack in my parts stash with the lines still connected.

I found the original lines anyway - looks like the small one is the high pressure and the large is the return.
