Clutch Slipping?

Post by Reck »

Alright, so in high gears (3/4/5) if I put my foot down, the revs shoot up and the engine screams but the car doesn't have any 'go'. Presuming this is the clutch slipping?

From memory the clutch had a fair bit of meat left on it when installed a few months ago. What are the common/possible causes for M10 clutch slip? Could it (hopefully not) be rear crank seal spewing oil and contaminating the plate or is it just more likely to be worn?

Reck, I've experienced both. last time I thought the clutch was slipping, it turned out to be what you described, rear seal from the engine leaking oil. With the fixed, so did the clutch skipping eventually. Definitely have a go at investigating that first - at the very least you should have that oil leak fixed anyway.

Thanks Arshad. Good to know someone else has experienced the same. I'm not positive it is leaking but I am losing oil somewhere. Might aswell replace the seal at the same time as the clutch I guess - looks to be relatively easy... pry the old one out, clean the area and smack a new one in?

P.S. Does anyone know the part number for the seal?

Hey Reck, I think you know my level of mechanical knowledge or I would help you of course! I don't know the seal number by hand, plus my engines an E30. He had the whole engine out, so it was much easier to service all the parts etc at the time.

No worries mate. I still didn't try that electrics place - might pop up tomorrow if I can find our convo on FB. FWIW I found an awesome place for exhaust repairs - Oldham Tyres and Exhaust on Hollin Lane. They installed two new exhaust gaskets and bolted everything up for a tenner. A tenner!!!

Ha ha, lets start a "hot deals" section for the Manchester area. The auto electric guys rock. Recently sorted an earth on my C-class. Mercedes wanted 220+ Vat, they just changed the wire and it's been fine £10 too! Let me know if you still need their details
