This is possibly the reason bmw changed design, theres not really a way to work out which one is worn out. I would see how much it costs for all three from the dealer and hold on to something / sit down when they give you a price.

Yeah, I understand that I have 3, but 3 of what? Are the M/C's all the same? Or is there one for the main M/C and then 2 different ones for the boosters?!

Right okay.

Having quickly looked, it would seem a new M/C is €476, which I'm not paying, especially when it's x3. So I'll be looking for a rebuild kit I think.

What are the chances the dealer will be able to find the right part, but without the chassis number? Saves me having to go home and then go to BMW tomorrow. A day saved helps make Gaydon more likely.

The BMW Classic parts website has 2 M/C's listed?

Is the difference just an age thing, or what?! The filter was set to a 1977 RHD 316.

lower one looks just like the one for later spec, the top one definitely is not the newer style one.

Ring brakes international and ask if they have rebuild kits for your specific number. your dealer may find your car using the number plate rather than the vin

So the top one is likely to be the one I'm after, and that's the main M/C?

I can't seem to find the ones for the boosters?

I've had a look on Brakes International's website and there's nothing there M/C wise, but I'll give them a ring and see what they say.

Okay, I'm fairly certain that the repair kit for the main M/C is part number: 34311103302

€78 from BMW Classic parts, I'll ring the dealer and see how much it is from them, and lead times.

The boosters will have to wait/hope they're fine and it's just the main M/C.

Okay, so I went to remove the master cylinder, but hit a brick wall when trying to remove the pushrod from the cylinder!

How on earth does it come apart?!

Have you got the master completely out?

Theres a snap ring behind the rubber seal on the rod. Remove that snap ring. There maybe a lock pin.

Watch some youtube vids on rebuilding masters. They all work the same way.

I couldn't get the master off the pushrod, I could just about see the snap ring, but the little bugger wouldn't budge at all!

Take the snap ring out then the stop bolt out from the side of the cylinder and the rod will come out.
I changed the seals on mine about a year ago I used a kit from big red.the whole kit for the master and the booster
Was under £40.if you ring them they are very helpfull

Yeah I've got a rebuild kit from Brakes International, hopefully the quality is equal to that of Bigg Red.

I'll have another look at it tonight.

My biggest issue with the snap ring was accessibility, the pushrod is obviously attached to the pedal, meaning space is tight and for the life of me I can't get in there to work on it!

Hang on. You can't do it with it still in the car!! Lmao.

Undo the clevis from the brake arm and take the whole thing out. You need to rebuild it on the work bench n then bench bleed it. It's a messy job and requires a clean area. You will get brake fluid everywhere!
