m42 conversion

Post by mdw »

I've got a 316 m10 and i'mthinking about dropping a m42 in it.

I've picked up an e30 m42 engine and gearbox already so i just need a basic shopping list of other bits i'm going to need.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a decent guide for this conversion.

Thanks

I am part way through fitting an M42 to my Baur. The E30 is the better donor as my donor was an E36, and Ive had to change the sump, exhaust manifold and ECU to the earlier ones. If you find Fritz Bits ( google them ) they have some worthwhile information on their website. Obviously the main changes involve connecting the electronics, altering the fuel system for injection. Im going to have to relocate the battery as I havent found space for it under the bonnet. Ive used the E36 gearbox ( as I am converting from auto ) and found that the E36 propshaft was the perfect length, but the centre bearing was in a different place. I really must take some photos.

i've had a look at fritz and the info on the site begins to help.

Is there any guides on the conversion so i can see any pitfalls and problems that need to be overcome before i start.

I've done a search and there's a lot of info about various parts of the conversion but i can't seem to find a complete guide that has all the info I need. Surely someone has done a guide of how they did it?

I didnt find one. Its not really rocket science tho. If you do it, just overcome one problem at a time !
