Rust remover

Post by Shushman »

Hey guys. Im a little lost on what to get as a simple rust remover. Never used one before. I dont mean a paint and rust removing drill bit. I mean a solution that can be brushed on which will reduce or hopefully remove small bits of surface rust. Any suggestions of a particular make or product.

Cheers.

I tend to use Kurust. I grind back ay rust until it's just pitting, and then kurust it, leave it half an hour, and wipe it with a thinners soaked rag. I think if you leave it on good metal, the paint doesn't adhere as well as it could. but in the pitting, it remains and does the job it should, which is convert the rust into a neutral stable compound. I then overpaint it with a zinc rich etch primer that my local paint place does.

I used to use Bilt Hambers Deox, which works very well for parts you can submerge until someone told me its active ingredient is Citric acid, which you can buy really cheap on ebay cos its the major ingredient for bath bombs. Ive tried their gel on body panels and its not as good

Hi. I use the fluid that you clean your coffie machine with when it starte to snore to much (and I am not joking :P). It contains phosphorus acid in a mild mixture, so in that way it is very gentle but still quite effective.

I have used it on many motorcycle tanks that were rusty inside. Filled them up with this and leave it for about 24 hours. After that all rust was gone - back to clean and fresh metal again. After the treatment rember that the first thing to do is adding som protective oil, as it otherwise starts to rust soon after.

Have been trying out the Hammerite rust gel the last week or so, can't say I am currently too impressed, it works but its not got mind blowing performance. However seems to be safe enough on paint/plastics and chrome even if left indefinitely.

I use a liquid brush on that has phosphoric acid in it,,scrap off all the flakes and wire brush the surface, apply the rust remover-gel, let set ,wash off with water, redo if necessary, then go from there.
