Don't put a lumpy cam in if you are using it as a daily type road car. The slug has an expensively rebuilt 284 cammed ported rebored balanced fuel injected throttle bodied lightened M10 which gives me 150-160 bhp, has to be thoroughly warmed up before it idles and even then is no fun whatsoever to drive in anything resembling traffic (the extra low solid suspension also makes it no fun).

Rebuild it as standard as possible would be my advice. NAs's turbo suggestion is a good one. M10 will stand enormous boost as BMW discovered in F1. If you just rebuild your engine with standard bits it will turbo very nicely.

Yea if I had an m10 I wanted to stick with the easiest way is to turbocharge. It's been done a million times. There is bags of room for turbos and pipes and intercoolers. Easy to plumb the oil feed /drain and you can just get a megasquirt on it too.

Just get an mls gasket for it if you drive hard and decent head bolts you can probably get away with more boost.

tuning a m10 is pricy too, same garage as mine, M10B20 with S14 ITB's and S65 V8 exhaust manifold (yes it fits like a glove).

The lumpy idle of a cam and associated running wouldn't cause me too much worry. The car is very much evening and weekend use only, it never gets used for commuting.

My worry about FI, specifically turbocharging, is that I know very little about it, meaning I'd need to pay a lot of labour rates, which is wasted money, considering I can do most of the work myself with a cam and carbs.

I'm very open to FI, but is it really as easy as plumb it all together and slap a megasquirt onto it and away you go?

Has anyone on here done it? Nas, is it something you've worked on before?

As you say, the idea of comedy boost would be awesome, and yeah, as said the nod towards the M12 F1 engine would be pretty cool.

What does "as standard as possible" mean when speaking about carbs? I guess that a twin weber set is still a must, in a turbo conversion, no? Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I don't know, so I am asking.

And, second, are there ready turbo kits for M10 1.6?, if " it's been done hundreds of times" ?

I might also be interested, as I am starting to want "something more" from my car as well

nearly all the cars I have owned have been turbo charged, I understand how they work and its fairly simple really.

I did look into this a few years ago when I got my e21. decided that I liked n/a noise the straight six m50 makes and I thought it would be cheaper, but actually, its probably not thinking about it now..

Heres my part list I got

e30 318i engine / loom / ecu / injectors - swap your old sump and engine mounts over
Turbo manifold. (custom) but you can get these from VAC motorsports
t25 off something like a 200sx / saab
intercooler off a sprinter van or something the right size to go behind the grills. obviously inc some intercooler pipe
uprated clutch
oil feed / drain for the turbo / Oil drain tap in the sump and an oil cooler.
remap the stock e30 ecu eprom.
MLS head gasket and ARP head bolts if you want to run a bit more boost / longevity
boost controller and gauge
exhaust.

you could in theory get everything for about £1500, if you get everything brand new and rebuild the engine then that will go up a lot more obviously.

It is really is a case of bolting everything on and routing some pipe. the ecu but its just an eprom tune which most tuners can do easily so you just need a rolling road day.

I'm not saying this is the only solution n/a tuning gets really expensive too, your looking at cams. pistons, carbs, cranks and all that stuff that Jim did your in for 5k.

I had an idea to rear mount the turbo as detailed in this really long read - its so crazy I need to try it one day, if someone here does try it I will salute you.

Nice!Anyone know what sort of modification this requires? Is that the 1-4 or 5-8 mani?

you need the right hand side manifold, got it on ebay for 120 quid. 3 of 4 flanges fit perfect also the bolts, the fourth you need to stretch for 10mm and turn the flange so you can bolt it on the head.

will this hit the steering link on the rhd cars?

Some interesting reading, Nas.

Why not just turbo the M10 I have, carbed engines can run FI can't they?

I've done some brief reading on designs and builds, unfortunately it's something I'm very new to.
