That explains the big lump that's broken off the casing then.
Oh well, easily solved I guess?

Where is the original starter, that was on the car when you got it? I would have that one refurbished so that you can be sure you've got the correct one.

Oh.
In that case I would see if anyone here has an old one you can try? OR call Adam on 07970 477 740 or Office 01935 508089. He has one that's not had much use for £25 delivered.

Ok will do,is this something that's wrong with the flywheel maybe or gearbox?
Re: Help me cars making crazy electrical noise --update--
The starters for 4 cylinder motors look the same and bolt on the same as 6 cylinder motors, however there is a different amount of teeth on the starter dog (one tooth iirc) this is enough to put the starter dog and starter ring gear out of mesh and...... bang!

I ordered it with my reg though, and I'm old one has done the same, that's what's baffling me,do the auto cars have a different flywheel?
Re: Help me cars making crazy electrical noise --update--
Unless you know the history to the car reg plates don't mean much, there's plenty cars on this forum that won't match up to their reg numbers, ie 316's with 325 engines, check your vin number on realoem and see if it was built as manual or auto, oh and don't fit another starter the same as the last two!

Re: Help me cars making crazy electrical noise --update--
Am I the only one who's curious what happened to the casing that broke free? Bosch units work just fine I'd be hard pressed to believe its a brand issue
Re: Help me cars making crazy electrical noise --update--
It's a 316 with 1.8 auto the old mot slips say it's a 1.8 auto they also read out when you order the part "1.8?" "e21?" I told them auto but maybe that's where they went wrong and didn't take that into it,same thing I thought at first thought oh it's a faulty starter and now it's happened again

Re: Help me cars making crazy electrical noise --update--
Plug your VIN into real oem and get the dealership part #, or at least ask them if that part # matches the part # they gave you.
And my previous statement stands, did you find the rest of that casing? Any chance that it's binding somewhere and could be causing your starting woes?
