warning to gumtree users

Post by e21mad »

Hi guys. I have no idea what the benifit was of this scam but keep your eyes open. I received a text from sombody interested in my car that wanted me to reply by email. He was asking for.more pics....no buggy so I asked what areas he would like to see as I posted a good spread of shots. He replied with my car was a copy and not genuine and sent me a link to a gumtree ad to see for myself. The link was no good and asked you to log in. I did and could not find any other e21 let alone baur. The next day my account was hacked and they posted a flat for sale on my account! :-/

Ouch, yup always beware of links in e-mail and websites, it is always much safer to look up the website yourself.

NEVER click links that you're not sure of. I got a supposed email from the Inland Revenue about a tax rebate, where I was asked to just click and fill in the form. :screwy If you click it allows phishing and they can access your passwords etc.

I hear ya and that is normaly how I am, however, this was an actual gumtree link and item number which is why I checked it. Gumtree said it was a discontinued ad they used to key log me. That's why the warning. It looked just like if I had posted a link to my ad on here. They also identified the email adress from where they posted in my acount so hopefuly they can do something. No loss for me thank god, I used a one off pass word for the ad just as a precaution. I'm guessing they were trying to flood my in box with replies or something. Very strange.

Normally a scam needs to be opened and then they ask you to click a dodgy link, that's where you say f#%k off and delete but now there are clever scams, where once you look at it they are in!!! They then wait for you to use eBay, PayPal, Internet banking etc and clean you out! Don't open anything that you don't recognise :shock Feckkers!!

Hi guys its stepped up a level! Don't answer any email from a buyer called Bob Wright. Do not aknowledge any email from gumtree that says you have received a email response. Go to the site directly and log in and check any email requests from your account only. And for god sake don't fill in anything from gumtree asking for your details. They have been flooded today about this because the scammers are somehow using actual gumtree logos, business reg numbers and all so they look exactly like they are from gumtree. If you look at the fine print at the bottom of the email that says you have a reply, you will note it says you are subsribed as.......if it isn't your email adress..it is the scammer. Gumtree tells me thier security team is looking into it at the moment and that have had dozens of complaints today.

message to ALL

HMRC NEVER use email for these sort of items- ever!

if you get one it is a trap!

Same goes for all those bank requests for ID etc and those invoices from ANO....

delete them ab initio.............

Good to warn everyone though! And it is pretty easy to disguise a dodgy link as a trustworthy one so always type the url yourself.

Curious how this will unfold...
