Damper options...forgive me for going over old ground!

Post by Desmos »

Dear Knowledgable ones,

My front dampers are shot. I've done some research and have a few questions.
Predominately the car is for road use, I'm looking to lower around 40mm so thinking Apex springs.
I'm leaning more towards B4 dampers all round.
Are B6 really worth the extra dough?

I'm also consider the spax adjustable set up as it's only another £100 more than above...any feedback?

Thinking the cars not really a flat out thrasher as it's only a 320/6 with a 5 speed (so more of a creamy cruiser) so coilovers would be a little too much of a move from that area.
I'll also replace lower arms and ARB bushes

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly received.
Thanks in advance.

My 320/6 had a big TLC lap last winter.

I placed new B6 with the original springs. Offcourse all rubbers are new. It did not loose it's comfort totally but corners much better then a full original setup.

I'm guessing the b4's will be a step up from oe, and will feel heaps better than what's currently fitted.
It's more justifying the leap up in price to b6's, unless I upgrade everything up to their spec, (brakes, engine, diff)
hmmm...

depend what your budget is but if B6's are a bit steep there isnt many other options in the sports insert range. If its just for cruising new OE shock would be fine IMO.

I've run B4's on a mk1 Scirocco in the past, and I was impressed with them as an option for a stock-ish car. Not suited to lowered stiffer springs so much, but they rode very well. With brand new stock bushes, it was tight and predictable.

Thanks guys. It's a choice between the spax and b4's I think. I want to stay on the original 13" tyres so can't go too stiff as it will just highlight sidewall flex.
Is anyone on Spax with 13's?

If i was choosing between bilstein and spax, based on experience of the appalling chrome plating on the shock shafts of the RSX's i had on a golf a decade or so back, I'd go bilstein! I have no idea if their quality has improved markedly in the last 10 years, but once bitten twice shy.

yeah you want the billys. I have driven on a 40mm lowering kit and the billy shocks on an e21 and the ride was very nice.

Cheers nas80. I'd just ordered up a set of b4's and some Apex lowering springs prior to checking back on here.
Your reply has cemented my choice. I'll let you know how it sits after fitment.
Thanks y'all!

I am. Ride seem good but then my daily drive is an E85 with sport suspension lol!

A 40mm drop is not excessive on an E21 & a decent set of shocks keeps it in check for the driving you say you will be doing.

The springs I took off turned out to be H&R's with a 40mm drop too. I keep meaning to check the postage so I can put them up for sale.
