Replacing diff bearings.

Post by PaulD »

OK, I'm sure this has already been covered, but I can't find anything.

What sort of a job is it to replace the bearings (all of them) in an original (small case) E21 LSD?

Do I need special tools to do this or to set it up again afterwards, or can it be done with ordinary equipment? Is there by any chance a technical article on here anywhere that describes the procedure?

Many thanks in advance - hope someone who's done it can comment.

No experience there myself, only replaced output seals. And perhaps the output bearings won't be too hard to change, the input bearing will be, I believe it should be fastened under 440Nm torque but what's worse is that it needs to be shimmed to fit otherwise it will whine and break. I'd go to a diff specialist and while you're taking the diff apart anyway consider a full rebuild. Added value is that the limited slip mechanism will be fresh and fully functional again, can even be modified to your taste. Our website's main sponsor Hardeman Motorsport is a real specialist but not around the corner for you I guess.
