Twin carbs on e21 316 what's needed best fuel set up

Post by LeeLee »

I'm planning on fitting twin 40 dellorto side drafts I bought from mark ,
i've got new manifold gaskets and planning on buying a king filter to run them of my standard fuel pump,
I was wondering what else is needed?
I see a water pipe is needed on 2002's I see people using metal pipe, how do people usually by pass this just a longer hose? Any help would be great as I'm gonna be doing this soon,
I will be taking the car to northampton Motorsport to get it tuned up so it will run ok on them but I'm going to be looking at getting into tuning them myself eventually also

One of the things that I've seen people miss is when fitting the carbs to the manifold they should not be tight, there should be a little flex to them to give the carbs a chance to kind of self level.

Vacuum take off for the brake servo, check the manifold has one or you will need to get one installed.

Personally I wouldn't have the manifold flow water and would bypass it but I'm sure others will be along to advise otherwise.

It's reasonably easy to chuck a weber carb pump in. Electrics for them are pretty easy with a simple relay.

I've bin looking at doing a facet pump as adviced by a mate, the manifold has a hole in for the vacuum for servo,I've seen they have little rubbers and curved washers for mounting them to the manifold, that's good to know though il try and keep that in mind I also seen a small glass filter used near the carbs,I suppose I should use a king filter aswel and thought a inline fuel cut of would be a good idea to fit just incase

These carbs used to live on my car. Mark bought them from me not so long ago.

I was running them with a facet red top electric fuel pump. Hope that helps.

They ran okay. They were a pain in the arse to tune but once you did they sounded great and gave the car a real kick.I used to love the backfire/popping you'd get on deceleration. Sounded great. Getting them properly cleaned, jetted and tuned was always on my to-do list but I never got round to it.

I was averaging 18mpg with them though and my E21 was my daily driver at the time so couldn't justify keeping them and switched to a Weber!

Good luck. FYI they're the reason the owner sold me the car in the first place - they backfired so much they set his bonnet lining on fire!

Haha yeah, sorry not trying to scare you. I never had such an issue with them. They were just poorly set up and massively overfueling.
