I believe its nothing more than the most forward slot on the crank and then just the AC compressor.

But does it go in the inside of the tensioner? Or along the outside. I tried both and on the inside there was too much play, on the outside the belt was too tight and the pulleys were rubbing together. Perhaps they sold me the wrong size belt…

Tensioner? Do you have a picture?
Belt should be 12.5x823 or 12.5x825 mm.

I can't find a picture of an M10 diagram, but it looks pretty close to this. (Red arrow shows tensioner)

Interesting, never seen something similar on a M10, see pic below is what it should be and that's all afaik. Aftermarket A/C perhaps?

I will try and get a picture under the hood after I get home from work. Its a 1983 320is, did they not come standard with AC? I would have thought that was standard on the final year of the e21...

I can not wait untill this picture.
Normal you have a two or three way pulley at the crankshaft. Then line out the belt for the alternator/waterpump. The AC compressor has his own belt and if you have powersteering then you have a seperate belt also i believe.
To get the tension at the belt you loosen a bolt of the AC compressor and slide it along a bracket. Then tighten the bolt. The same is for the belt at the alternator.
