Welcome here! Does the car have a different shift pattern?

to be honest im not sure he was always very protective over it so i only got to drive it once or twice in my life an thats been 15 years ago at the least and it still sitting at my grandparents so that it can remain garage kept ill have to get back to you the next time im up there i will check all i know was it was his dying wish that it be mine and that before it was given to me it was to be fully restored inside and out an its barely been a week since all of this transpired so as i know more i will repost thank you very much

OK time to investigate then. You don't have to start the car to test, just push the clutch pedal. You always feel some resistance when you try to shift to reverse, with a dogleg you will have to do the same to engage 1st.
