Oil filters

Post by LeeLee »

What's all this talk on 02forum about non genuine oil filters potentially damaging engines?
I've just bought a Mann filter do I need to get another now?
Anyone have a bad experience on here?

That's a story that's going round for ages for M10, M20 and S14 engines but I never received any first hand info or proof. I don't believe there is much risk but with an OEM filter costing under 8 quid I don't see any reason not to buy oem.

With the paper filter inserts that are used for later models, that's where you see issues with filters being ripped apart but sofar I've only seen that in cases where its more than likely change intervals were not respected.

I heard it was that the cheaper filters don't have a non-return valve - i.e. they drain into the sump when the engine is turned off and it takes several seconds longer to reach oil pressure again. Dunno how true it is. Genuine BMW filters can be picked up off ebay for around a fiver so I see no reason to risk it.

Think I'll open up an oil filter myself to check if there's a non return valve in there, that's what's being said but again no proof whatsoever. What I do know is that the oil pump has a non return valve that has that function and I wouldn't be surprised if that would be the only one.

As for engine oil, usually on a M10 10W40 of 15W40 does a good job. Only if that leads to excessive smoke or oil consumption I'd go one grade thicker.
