Subframe, suspension and 5 speed - what to remember?

Post by E21noob »

Hi all.

Doing my rear subframe bushings (got a complete set of polys from strongflex), suspension and springs, and putting in a 5 speed gearbox.

Putting in new flexdisc, centering sleeve, a balanced prop shaft with new crosses and centre mount bearing, all the rubber and soft bits on the gear shift linkage are new, new poly bushings on subframe, trailing arms and stabilisor, all the rubber and soft bits and the tower mounts on the rear shocks, and probably a new exhaust.

I guess an oil change in the diff and gearbox is in order, and ofcourse I'll be giving the whole thing some wirebrush lovin', paint and anti-rust treatment.

What am I forgetting? Anything else worth doing whilst I have it off? Bearings on the diff or the gearbox? Any seals?

Decided to wait with the brakes, brake lines, handbrake wires, and wheel bearings - thinking they can all be done later.

Also thinking the clutch can wait, as next year I plan for the engine to come out for some attention.

New thread coming up on the new car (318)! Will document progress :)

I do for the gearbox, but not for the engine.

Are you thinking of 3 and 12?

Hm, are they difficult to get to when the sub and propshaft are in place?

Not really. I'd change gearbox o-rings if you see leaks, otherwise I'd leave them.
