Conical front stabilisor to control arm poly bushings

Post by E21noob »

Has anyone replaced their front stabilisor to control arm bushings?

I have the conical type, and cant find a source for poly bushes. Oem seems to be available so I guess I'll go for those.

Part number 31121116212.

Photo in my thread, still cant figured out how to link photos from ipad.

Believe he ordered them from Strongflex but they only have the later straight type, not the conical ones.

There are two types of bushes: 39mm (031322) and 42mm (031446).
Before buying make sure which type is in Your car.
031322 bush fits models from 1978 to 1983, bush 031446 fits from 1975 to 1978

Or you can switch to the new type wishbone . You must also replace stabilizer to facelift.

Just to add to this I am currently poly bushing the Baur. Front end dismantled, burn bushes out, remove the rusty steel sleeve from the bush that the ARB goes through and the hole in my suspension arm appears to be far nearer to 42mm than the 39 strongflex's site implied I needed. Tried shimming it out with cut up cans, but when I put it onto the arb and wiggled it, there was far too much movement.

So I've ordered some 42mm bushes and my car will have to sit on the path in pieces.

I do wonder if I was meant to leave the metal sleeve off the original bush in place...

Interesting, I'm planning on doing this soon so I'm interested to hear your progress. Thanks.

Which model is your Baur? I've an 83 316.

I removed a similar sleeve from the diff hanger when mounting poly bushes there, and it was the right thing to do. Hope it works out for you with the 42mm

Jim,

How did you get on with this in the end?
I need some control arm bushes soon for my new build.

Cheers

The 42mm ones were right once the metal sleeves were out. I suspect the 39's were right with the sleeve in.

I have two sets of lubed and once inserted 39mm bushes and a set of 42mm ones. I bought two sets as I was planning to do the slug as well.

If you want I can send you both versions so you can use whichever is right and send the others back. You'll need the inner wishbone bushes though.

Sounds like you've worked it out Jim.

Did you go for Red 80ShA or Yellow (Sport) 90ShA ?

No need for the inner bushes for me, spherical bearings with adjustment

Cheers

You can check on the strongflex website what size you need. I'm happy to lend to buy or whatever. Plan was to do the slug front end, but the baur job is consuming all of my free time. Currently got to dismantle a driveshaft CV joint cos there's a split in the boot - either was there before, or I hit it with the BFH while bashing the shaft through the hub.

Hi Jim,

Do you still have some of the lower outer bushings spare?
I'm about to do mine so it would be perfect if you had one of each, save be buying the wrong one.
I'm also Manchester based.
