Dash Clock not functioning properly.

Post by Dammizi »

Hi, currently going through a my e21 which has been standing for over 13 years with little past history about it....

latest problem is my dash clock which is not functioning at all on one cluster set and now tried another spare cluster I was given but seems to be only partially working.... have any of you ever had this issue? if so what would you reccomend?

1: Replace all aged components on the board and hope for the best
2: Buy a replacment complete board that is currently working and hope it never gives any further problems? :whistle
3: maybe swap over the whole internal board for the internals of a new clock and bash them into place? :hammer

or maybe is there something I'm missing out on?

Had this with a few old VW's, and it happened to my 316 too, I found that dissconecting the battery, and bridging the leads together for a 20 seconds or so, then reconnecting them seemed to sort it. I'm no electronics wiz, so I have little idea why it works, but it seemed to sort it.

And otherwise another clock board will probably be the easiest option?

Thx joeren, spent a few hours yesterday playing about with it and deciced that replacing the caps on the board seems the best chance right now since they seem to have blown and leaked over time. Will try replacing them tomorrow as soon as the electronics shops are open. If tjis does not work, do any of you know where I can purchase the board from? Thx

tried shorting out the terminals as you said, did not work for me :/ also tried replacing the capacitors today and got 2 of the 4 of the displays to work fully for a few mins, but after turning off and on again it was back to looking like this :( guess i'm going to have to replace this.

found this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221583899856? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Exact same size display as the original and looks the same but you get the additional functionality of a temp sensor and volt meter inbuilt. all it needs is wiring in to the original clock buttons which hopefully should not be too hard :whistle

Nice find and upgrade indeed and not bad if the LED's are about the same size. Reminds me I need to do a report on my additional gauges
