320/6 Triple Weber VGS Carb System

Post by knapmann »

Hi All,

I have just bought this VGS system of triple IDFs as made for the E21 320/6. The only info I can find about it is in the below link:

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showt ... interested

"A small company called VGS racing or VGS performance (something along those lines) teamed up with Alpina and created a manifold, and linkage, and modified the carbs a bit. Apparently 13 of these were made for German hill climb 320/6 e21's". So this is one of 13 in the world."

Does anyone on here know any more about this type of system and its special history?
Can anyone translate the article in the link?

Unfortunately mine is missing the air intake plenum :(

That's a nice set of carbs. I would love to have this someday at my own 320/6.

If this is super rare i do not know. It could be that the intake and carbs are finetuned by that company but further it looks like a standard sidedraft carbsetting.
I know that they place the carbs in a upside position because the intake would have problems with the brakebooster at the LHD cars.

Nice set indeed, but the story sounds funny. Can't remember many 320/6's being used for hillclimbs in any way (they would choose a 4 cylinder for anything under 1999cc or a 323i or bigger engine for above) and Alpina was never involved in something like this either, they made their own and in much larger quantities. I can't see any relation between VGS (http://www.vgs-motorsport.com) and Alpina, guess that was just a nice story to get the stuff sold.

But still, forget about the story and enjoy a sweet set of carbs. For the intake plenum you can always check with VGS themselves of course. And you were planning to add a link yourself as well?

I also think vertical IDFs were used due to the in-block distributor position in the E21 M20

So it is a Krankenberg tuning setup. I would love to have something like this but i want to keep the standard ignition setup like the pictures at the bottom of you're link.

If you have more info about this and ofcourse a lott of pictures then please put them on the forum.

I found this car profiled in the below link, it appears to have the kit or one very similar on a 320/6
