Seized brake drum adjusters

Post by AndyBaur »

I know this is an old problem & some cowboy has rounded off the adjusters. I managed to get the rear adjuster freed off with heat & one of those fancy gripping ring spanners. Unfortunately you can't get a ring spanner on the front adjuster. Are there any work-arounds?

With all this I figured I would just get a new backplate - W & N do them for £50 but I would probably go for genuine BMW.

The Haynes manual says "just" use a puller to remove the hub & my searches reveal the hub nut can be a problem.

Does removing the hub damage the bearings or can they be left in place?

You can leave them in place.

Big socket, breaker bar and if necessary a piece of scaffold pole to extend the bar will shift the hub nuts. Wheels off and remove centre caps then car back on ground with weight on wheels, in gear and handbrake on. Soak them with some penetrating oil and obviously remove the split pin!

I've got mine dismantled while I'm doing the bushes so putting the arms in the workmate and a bit of bashing removed the hub. A puller would probably have been easier!

If you do end up bashing it, be careful as it's very easy to muller the end of the axle which knackers the threads and squishes the hole that your split pin goes in. Drift in the hole on the end is advisable.

Sounds like a good tip. I should be able to borrow a 3 leg puller which will help. I might even be able to get a really big breaker bar as my mate works on gas governors.

What's an M24 - 36mm a/f ?
