Car getting resprayed

Post by raseeda green »

Hi all how's it going ?
I'm glad to say I'm getting the car respreyed and it's about time all the red has faded on it it it's life so it's time now! Hoo ray

Just a question for those whose had their e21 resprayed?
What are the usual parts that may need replacing eg, window rubbers, door rubbers or chrome trims on the body work and which ones, and where can I get the replacements if anyone's got any please list them here and I may be in touch!
Thank you and looking forwards to showing the finished work
Cheers
Lee :banana

Nice plans!

If its going to be 'just' an outer respray, make sure to thoroughly inspect the rear wheel wells and remove the front wings for an inspection, both for rust of course... to prevent that you have to perform more work and ruin a fresh paint job. Door seals can be changed easily at any point. But the window seals and chrome trim around them, that is something you only want to do once so I'd focus on those.

Hi Lee, I'd follow Jeroen's advice for sure! Also, some other lessons learned from having my e21 sprayed twice is to ideally strip everything out - carpets, sound deadening etc. This way you'll get the true picture and it will be easier to repair at this stage then discovering you have holes and corrosion MOT time and having patches welded in on as needed basis.

I'd also pay special attention to the windscreen surround. If there is any rust, replace and treat ideally because this again will be a pain if it returns and will mean taking the windscreen out.

In terms of spare parts, the situation as we all know is getting more and more difficult by the day and us E21 (and especially us E3 owners!) have to really search or be creative.

Despite not having the best experiences with Walloth Nesch, they do have a good stash and it inevitably means returning to them for parts, even if it should be a last resort at times.

I was told about this site by an E3 owner http://www.bts-autoteile.de/ and I've ordered parts from there. All were BMW OEM and fairly priced if you'd like to see how you get on with seals for an E21.

Thank you jeroen and arshard yes myintenshion is to complete a Respray in one go, so it means all doors off and windows out and wings off to check, for rot. I'm gonna replace rear arches and sill and weld up the jacking point, just to neat it up. I guess it's having to put moneys aside to pay for the surprises we get.. Thanks for the info and forwards to seeing it shine once again.

It'd be great to see you at retro rides again this year, although perhaps a bit ambitious to have all that work done by then.
