Type 1 Conductive plate.

Post by Bigmeat »

For some time now we've been enjoying driving our freshly restored MK1 Baur.

But there's been an annoying electrical issue which has been driving me crazy. The repeater lights -indicator, brake, handbrake & the fuel gauge don't work. Actually the Indicator repeater works when the handbrake is on but that's it.

After hours of faffing about I realised just now that my wiring loom has 7 cables /connections. But the conductive plate has 10 & I think is off a MK2. It looks like my wires either don't make contact or bridge 2 connectors, & is, I assume the reason for the problems.

I've looked at W&N, they list 3 'left conductive plates'.

Two appear suitable

part NO- s
A62111366786 and A62111359441

Anyone know if it matters which one I get? Although my car is registered as a 1979 I don't know when it originally was built & sent to Baur.

the only other thing is that my wiring has 2 blue cables that end in an 'L' shaped connector that slots into the top of the existing conductive plate. I can't figure out what it does & there's no slot on either of the 2 plates on W+N

The next question is, I don't suppose anyone has one lying around they'd like to donate? My wife has banned me from spending any more money on the car for now :-(

Thanks

Al

It is not likely Baur modified the wiring so the original production date should be leading. But I believe the early ones had the separate fuel tank warning light, on later ones this is integrated in the fuel gauge

Dunno about the connectors though, and as far as I can see I only have facelift clusters

Is it possible to find out the original production date?

Last 7 digits of the cars own VIN, not the Baur ID

Ah thanks. Did not know that.

So mine is
5961177

I assume that means Nov 1977. But what's the 596 mean?

It isn't that easy but if you plug that in at BMWFans or in ETK it says April 79

So the plate has come and I've swapped over the fuel gauge.

Now I have the indicator repeater lights working and the handbrake light. Also when I press in the button on top of the brake fluid reservoir the handbrake light lights up.

But the fuel gauge doesn't work at all.

Also on the original board I removed it has a removable pcb at the top. My new one doesn't. I tried removing it and fitting it to my new one but all it did was make the brake wear light come on permanently.

Anyone know what the pcb actually does and if it should be fitted to my car. It's a late type 1. Early '79.

Wouldn't be surprised if you have a wiring mismatch between the two now. Can't be of much help there apart from a very early pic with the separate tank light at the top
