bonnet

Post by mcjjordan »

so just been to see my car after months of hybernation and i noticed that the bonnet is in really good condition exept for the tray that sits under the grills :(
seems as the whole piece that attaches is rusty
looks like water collects under rubber as there is no metal left and also along the joins to main body either side.
so can this piece been replaced seperetly or do i need to find a whole new bonnet as its dent free and the best bit of paint on the whole car!

Not really but the part is not available separately. But perhaps some creativity and a good used example can help you out.

On my 323i what looked like some superficial rust at the back meant I had to find a replacement at respray time. My bodywork guy said he could fibreglass it, but it would come back and it couldn't be welded because the thinness of the metal that makes up the panel would warp it.

I'd personally keep an eye out for a good replacement. They do turn up on ebay and cars being broken on here.

What about cutting out this section of a damaged bonnet?

Anyone got an old bonnet with this part intact?
That could cut it out and then i can either graft it on to mine or use it as a mould to make a grp replacement so wont rust.

You realise its only spot welded on.

Drill it off and then make another and just weld it back on with a cold damp cloth on the other side

Smash it with weld through primer then paint it
