There's an Allen bolt on the top side of the box. Above where the linkage shaft goes into the box.

I used to have problems getting gears and that Allen bolt was loose. Give it a tighten may solve your issue.

It's an absolute utter pain to get to.

An update....

I reset the clutch pedal (and brake while I was there) to the haynes spec, but this didn't help the problem at all, so I actually re-adjusted them again slightly to where they were most responsive and comfortable, along with the accelerator pedal.

Then back to the difficulty selecting gears... I decided to change the gearbox oil again, this time using Red Line gearbox oil, as lot's of e21 drivers had recommended it.

After only about an hour in total of driving it already feels about 80% better, even with these particularly cold mornings!

I used Red Line MTL 70W80 Manual Transmission Oil 946ml, it cost me £37 delivered, for two bottles - I highly recommend it to anyone who is having the same problems as me.

I will report back if anything changes, but so far very happy.

Dave

P.S for the gearbox oil change you also need a 17mm allen bit socket, and a cheap hand pump to get the new oil into the gearbox.
