very confused

Post by Ciaranclarke1 »

Basically I have a 76 316, I've bought a 1.6 m10 engine out of a 316 from a friend in Germany (I'm UK based) which was a facelift version, I managed to lose an engine mount bracket and I've finally got my hands on another pressed steel one, but the engine will not fit, the sump is just sitting on the subframe before it gets to the engine mounts.
Is there a difference between LHD/RHD brackets/suframes/ sumps? or a different sump on the facelift version of the car?
any help would be appreciated!

oh I'll add that the new pressed steel bracket was from a 320i m10 if that makes a difference!

You got the mounts in the correct mounting holes on the block?

A quick look at etk.cc tells me there was a change at 08.1978.

Useful info there - so if you are not familiar with it you should take a look.

Doesn't look like the 320i is any different from any other 4 cylinder model.

Sump is same on all M10 E21 models and does not seem there is any difference in LHD/RHD.

Also, this does not seem to be linked with the new subframe type which came 10.1978.

Do neither of the supports line up, or just your new one?

I can take some pics of my LHD 08.1978 318 sometime the next few days so you can compare. Maybe someone else can do the same for a RHD.

I will have to have a look on there when I'm home!

In terms of them lining up, they both line up perfectly and both sit separately on the mount, just not at the same time purely because of the sump hitting the subframe?

Where are you based? If you're near Birmingham you can come look at mine. It's converted from LHD to RHD running a 2.0 m10.

early vs late engine mounts are different. I have an early e21 (or may be 2002) block in the slug, had to get different mount for it. Subframes are about the same I think.

they're the same engine mounts as I have E21noob! I'm guessing I'll need the later engine mounts then? seems to make the most sense so far if it has worked the opposite way round with yours drjim?

I may have the removed mount sat in my box of bits that is on a shelf in my old workshop but won't be down there until end of next week at the earliest.
