I hope everybody is fine.
I have to repair my gear box. But I have a problem to identify my gearbox.
I know some things about this topc, but some others are not clear for me :
The box I own is genuine (the precedent told me about it), and it's a 5 speed Sport gearbox with the first gear at the rear.
Here's my numbers of my car and gearbox:
BMW 323i - E21 - september 1981
Serial number : 7453026
The gearbox :
- Getrag M60
At the rear of the box, behind the triangular Output flange (not square):
242029101
8.2 - 225 - DIN 158
Inside the box :
51
225
2420017100
Outside the front side, near the motor : 00251GJ
3 cranksets as usal, the reverse light switch behind, and 3 washers at the end of the box.
I know that the 242 models are 4 speed gearboxes, and usually, the 323 have a 245.
Why a 242 for me ? An error of Getrag ?
When I use my car, I've seen that the speed ratio is good on each speed, as mentioned on the car's manual.
Insn't it an enigma ? For me yes, it is !!!
If you have ideas about it, I would be very pleased. I've seen on the forum that numbers could be false with Getrag, so that a 242 could be a real 5 speed Sport. Mybe I'm in this cas, but, which model of box do I refer to buy my new needed parts?
Thank you everybody.
Olivier.
