Gearbox identification BMW 323 i

Post by so.net@sfr.fr »

Hi evrybody
I hope everybody is fine.
I have to repair my gear box. But I have a problem to identify my gearbox.
I know some things about this topc, but some others are not clear for me :
The box I own is genuine (the precedent told me about it), and it's a 5 speed Sport gearbox with the first gear at the rear.
Here's my numbers of my car and gearbox:
BMW 323i - E21 - september 1981
Serial number : 7453026

The gearbox :
- Getrag M60
At the rear of the box, behind the triangular Output flange (not square):
242029101
8.2 - 225 - DIN 158

Inside the box :
51
225
2420017100

Outside the front side, near the motor : 00251GJ

3 cranksets as usal, the reverse light switch behind, and 3 washers at the end of the box.

I know that the 242 models are 4 speed gearboxes, and usually, the 323 have a 245.
Why a 242 for me ? An error of Getrag ?

When I use my car, I've seen that the speed ratio is good on each speed, as mentioned on the car's manual.

Insn't it an enigma ? For me yes, it is !!!

If you have ideas about it, I would be very pleased. I've seen on the forum that numbers could be false with Getrag, so that a 242 could be a real 5 speed Sport. Mybe I'm in this cas, but, which model of box do I refer to buy my new needed parts?

Thank you everybody. :thnx
Olivier.

Pretty sure its a 245 dogleg but they made a mess with these covers, they hardly ever match so don't be fooled by 242. Also see http://www.bmwe21.net/?page_id=124

Hi Jeroen
Thanks for your reply. I've seen this page with the link. Very interesting. It seems I'm not the only one in this case.
So can I find my parts with my serial number on Real Oem and choose the 245 one ? I think so.

5-speed sport (dogleg) up to 9/80. Originally with 4-bolt output flange, yours changed to 3-bolt flange.

Hi guys,

I just bought a jewel here on Tenerife. The ´76 320i M10 engine is equipped originally with a 5 gear sport box. The problem is that it makes a lot of noise in lower gears. I googled about the type and found out that it could be a Getrag 245/2.

Here on Tenerife it´s difficult to get certain spare parts. Maybe someone can give me a hint where to find the gasket and bearings kit for this box?

Thank you in advance,

Dirk
