Alternator Bushings

Post by Jos Cornelissen »

Hi e21 friends,

Are you looking for a permanent fix for those annoying worn alternator bushings? Here you are in the right place. Last year i replaced my old worn out rubber bushings for brand new rubber ones and now 13 months later, they are worn out again. As i hate to replace the same part over and over again i came up with a permanent fix myself.

Here are the plans to make steel/aluminium bushings for the alternator on our cars (and e30's). These bushings can be used on both m10 and m20 engines. You need 2 of the small bushings and 2 of the bigger ones. It is best to make the bushings from aluminium as the alternator housing is aluminium too.

These bushings are designed to fit very snug in the alternator housing so to install them you'll need to gently tap them in with a rubber mallet or press them in with a vise.

Please leave a comment if you think this was usefull and also leave a comment if you have made and istalled them and how you like them.

I think I would feel better with PU as well, it's not a competition car. However, even with the S14 which is notorious for this issue, fresh rubber here does a good enough job here sofar.

I see no issue with solid mounting the alternator. It's solid mounted on every car I've come across since 1983. I suspect the bushes were a precaution that some manufacturers fitted but that turned out to be a redundant feature.
