Bosch Distributor 0 237 002 096???

I needed to replace the pulse generator in my 1982 320i US, however, could not get the pin out, so I decided to just get another distributor. My original distributor has the Bosch number 0 237 002 049. The rebuilt Bosch distributor I received from Parts Master/Cardone is 0 237 002 096. I've tried searching google, however, cannot determine if these are interchangeable/compatible. It appears that the "096" is for the E30 318i. If this is the case, then it would not work as I believe the gear spins in the opposite direction (or would it be the actual camshaft that does that?). I have not pulled out my old distributor as yet to confirm. Has anyone used the "096" to replace the "049"? Perhaps the housing of the "096" and "049" are the same and the internals are different? According to the Bosch electronic catalog there's only one type that fits and that's 0237002049 and is different than the one used for the 81-82 Euro 318i (E21)
