How low do I go?

Post by p4uke »

Hi

I’ve just bought some 15” BBS 7j’s for my 1983 e21 316 which currently has standard suspension. Obviously it needs lowering as at the moment I can fit my head in the arch.

What I would like to know is can I just replace the springs or do I need to change the lot?

Also, how low do I go? I’ve seen some springs available with 40mm drop and 60mm

I've always worked on the idea that a 40mm drop on standard suspension is OK. 60mm+ drop u should look into upgrading the shock too

Just my opinion don't take it as gospel :)

The 7J wheels at the front may give you issues (rub the fenders and cause damages) if your dampers aren't too fresh, or if you go lower than 40mm drop. I would not fit wider than 195-wide tyres at the front which is also Alpina spec.
