New Hazard switch, now no hazards or clock!

Post by repoman »

My hazard switch popped out on my US 1982 320iA, and of course drained the battery. I purchased a new switch and installed it. Now, my turn signals work, however, my hazards, nor my clock work. All worked fine prior to the hazard switch going on the fritz. My digital clock lights up, however, displays a different time every time I start the car. I've reset it several times, however, will not keep time. I even purchased a second hazard switch with the same results. Could the two issues be related? Can it be a relay? Please advise. Thank you!

Sounds like you either blew a fuse or have a corroded one in the fusebox, indicators and hazards are on different fuses

Also see http://www.bmwe21.net/?page_id=130 but that layout is not the same for all E21's I believe. But fuses 6, 9 and 17 are under suspicion. All other lights and instruments work?

#17

Hazard warning system, interior light, glove compartment lamp, clock, interlock system, key lock warning buzzer, luggage compartment light.

I have an ohm meter, I can test to see which one of these is perhaps drawing the power.....or look to see if I can see a short.

Yup, and if it didn't blow immediately you may have some intermittent short, I've seen that with the switches for the interior lights, and you can check if all of these items are functional, as far as they're fitted of course.

Replaced the fuse, tested all those electricals on the fuse, and so far, it hasn't blown. Drove the car around for about 5 miles, starting and stopping. Still OK....will eventually rear it's ugly head again....
