Front Seats - BMW or other marque varieties

Post by ZenderE21 »

Back again with more drivel :boogie

In my quest to get this thing on a club permit I need to do something about the drivers seat. To put it nicely its stuffed, backrest brackets are bent, backrest material is disintegrating. Its ready to retire. So turning my eye to what to throw in there, I will have the restitched down the track in the interior design I am aiming at. E21 seats being original arent the most supportive, Id like to do some track events but dont want to throw a set of Sparcos in there......yet.

So whats out there that can be retrofitted, understand the BMW family of seats are prefered however here in Aus the early euro stuff prices have skyrocketed and people sit on their stuff rather than selling. E30 stuff is hard to find aswell. Have been suggested (I think it was) Mk3 VW Golf seats, are they a thing?

Anyway Im sure there are seats out there, what have people used?

Cheers, Ash

Just like BMW back then, so many other brands fitted Recaro seats, perhaps you can find a set from a VW or Ford or something for less money? That's what's done quite regularly over here and gives you a pretty decent and contemporary seat for less money, and several cases even the same seat as BMW used, just with a different fabric. You can always have them re upholstered in leather at a later stage.

Challenge: finding E21 runners, or fabricating them.

Thanks Jeroen. I dont think Ill get any Recaros but you never know your luck in a big city. Im handy enough with a tig so will butcher my existing seats to adapt to the new ones, otherwise there are actually a few chinesium branded generic ones available I can look at.

Im more interested in what anyone knows will fit, been on the ebay and gumtree hunt but I think I need to be more specific with my searching

I lucked upon a free pair of porsche boxster seats, I have them in the car now but with temporary bracketry until i can make stronger ones. Used the existing e21 runners and removed porsche ones from seatbase. Its still a work in progress but you will manage if handy with welder, my first install went well, just need to revise drivers seat attatchment mounting position to allow for base height adjustment, also wire up electric recline function cabling.
I have pics but not of bracketry, only first install ones, however, im not on any photoshare sites. i believe thats only way to share pics here, Im new here too so Hi All..

The seats have the switches on each seat, thinking 2 x 30amp relays, havent quite turned my mind to that yet but will update how it goes. Started on drivers seat last night, so should have definitive guide of how to install in a week if all goes well.
