Engine bay firewall

Post by Vic »

Hey all

So the E21 RHD engine bay firewall insulation mat is now obsolete, and lucky me my 323's crumbled when removing to have the bay sprayed :protest .. I'm now having to search for the most suitable material to reinstall; the original had the black butyl rubber as the top layer (to protect from water ingress), and goes a tad low down into gearbox tunnel. Last thing I want to do is fit an absorbing material which eventually holds water against the bay and interior partition :wtf

Wondering if any other member has had the privilege of solving this issue lol

Appreciate any advice guys, thanks

Curious as well! The LHD version was being made some time ago, not sure if they're all out again yet, but the quality from BMW was rubbish, so I'd like to find out about alternatives as well!

I didn't think I'd struggle this much to source a replacement, I can't reinstall the rebuilt engine until the mats in placed..

I'm looking into material used for marine proposes, between 10-20mm and closed cell foam, this would have the heat and waterproof properties required, and in an oem black finish.

Spoke to an insulation company, and they recommended Dynamats Dynaliner however the foam on this would blatantly absorb water and after some time the firewall panel would form areas of rust.

My pleasure! Just hoping for a bit more viewers, people are shifting to the superficial grounds of Fleshbook and the likes...
