when i leave the e21 320/6 standing for any long period i get a loose white mass accumulating around plug number 5- resembles damp salt. If the plug is removed the thread and tip are spotless. car runs fine. Could it be a leaky head ?
real head scratcher !!
what is it ?
Re: what is it ?
sounds like water/antifreeze deposits from a leak somewhere.
I'd look at the coolant reservoir cap and its overflow pipe as they are above that area.

Re: what is it ?
Right Ben, just my thoughts. Must be coolant, overspill, so not from the inside. Be carefull not to get dirt in the engine thru those plugholes. Before removing sparkplugs, inhectors of so, I always blast them with compressed air.
