Uwbuurman: 1978 323i polaris: almost done

My car is a type 1, so it is fitted with a electrical fan, instead of the later type 2 visco fan on the waterpump. According to the last MOT papers the fan was not working properly, second stage did not kick in. The fan uses two sensors. The first one kicks in at about 90 degrees Celsius, to a 60% resitor. Second sensor kicks in at about 99 degrees Celsius and gives 12volts on the fan, so full speed.

When I tested my fan, the bearing made noise. Of course I snapped the axle when I tried to losen the nut, that turned out to have a left threat. So I got a different fan, from a e23 745i. The fan it selve and the house are the same. I took that one apart and cleaned it. Could not get the bearing out, to clean it, so I boiled out the grease dirt and used pressed air. After five times it was clean.

All greased and put together: works like a charm at two speeds!

Since the fuellines are in place already, I started working on the tanks and pumpunit. The pumpunit consists of a pressure accumulator, a filter and a pump. My accumulator was old and rotten, so I ordered a new one.









The pump seems to be alright, so I kept it but replaced the filter. Hoses an lines are all new ofcourse. But at the assembly of the pumpunit, it turned out that the accumulator is missing a small thingy. Note the difference.




Ghis type is used after '82 and for my car clearly not the richt one. Ofcourse I could not return it, because it was sitting in my shop for over 6 months. Anyway, ordered the right one at just slghtly over 200 euros. But that one was considerably smaller, but is was the right and only replacement. The thing was that the bracket was to large for this part. So I had a nylin bush machined. It had to small pockets that hold the accumulator.







With that I cleared the difference in diameter, but because it is not a even diameter.



So another ring with a difference in diameter of 1 mm. That did the trick.

New hoses and hose clamps, original BMW, make me happy!



This bracket holds the hoses from and to the pumpunit against the floor. The foam thing prevents the hoses from wearing.



And the pumpunit is mounted. 3 small m6 rubbers, that’s it.



This is the fuel lines under the car, copper ones are the fuel lines, brass one is the vent line. This is where the right tank will be.



This is wherr the left tank will be, under the hatch below the rear seat. You see where the fuellines end and the vent lines.



The vent line is connected tot the plastic vent line with a piece of cloth covered hose. Of course with the rezinced original clamps. Just like they've done in 1978.

Next step is prepping the tanks. They are powdercoated. I took the best pair from my stock and fitted the hoses. After that I put on the sound deathning material and the heath shield. Just what is to be expexted from me, I just used some more, made it some what bigger. The effect? Silent tanks.













The sound deathning material is supposed to go on top and the heeth insulation goes on the side.

The exhaust runs between the two tanks and gets hot while driving.

Hoses are in place but not fitted yet.
