PAS options?!

Post by WigglySmile »

Hello everyone, if been looking for a PAS rack for a while now for my M52 swap but to no avail. I currently have a ZF quick rack and as much as I love the feel it gives you with the road, I much prefer the way my E30’s PAS feels.

With that being said, does anyone have any experience with modifying other power steering racks to fit The e21? Fabrication won’t be an issue for me, just looking anyone’s previous projects?

Thanks in advance!

Is an electric motor on the column an option, like Corsa's etc use. There seem to be companies out there offering to convert to electric power steering ( usually at great cost ! )
I'm looking at this for a non BMW project, and the parts are cheap and readily available.
Incidentally, my m42 engined Baur uses a manual Ford Escort rack

Electronic PAS is currently being finalized, I expect this will be available in the next 2-3 months. Not cheap, but an original PAS set isn't cheap either, and that usually requires a rebuild of rack and pump, new hoses, installation et cetera. If you take that into consideration the price isn't too crazy, believe its supposed to be priced at 1.750 Euros including VAT and installation.

The electric motor for the column, from EZ power steering was around 1200 euro iirc
I haven't yet fitted it, as I had all these engine issues to sort out, but I guess I will soon go for it. What are the differences between the electric and the electronic you mentioned Jeroen ?

No that's the same, I'm also speaking of EZ. But I believe that was 1200 ex VAT ex installation, and 1500 ex VAT in installation? Anyway, somewhere in that direction.

Yes, you are right, I just checked the invoice, I paid about 1300 euro ex VAT, for the kit + postage fee, so about 1600 euro total incl VAT, for the kit only (not installed)

But, if this is the same, why you wrote that this is being finalized and it will be available in 2-3 months time? I ordered this February 2018 and have had it in my hands for one year now (unopened, in its box and I guess time has come to have it install ...)

Well I am currently in touch with them and they did make a few indeed, but they are now working on finalizing the commercial side, better presentation, some tweaks, and a more detailed installation instruction. And from bmwe21.net we are of course providing support for that.

As I enjoy giving myself challenges, that's why I was going to do it myself. I can buy a used motor and a new controller for it for under £100, then fabricate the rest :)

Converted my 320/6 to electric steering approx. 2 years ago, using Corsa motor, cost me around £150 total, see my post on this with link to some photos.
If you are capable it's an enjoyable job, and very successful.
