hole in top of transmission

anyone know what hole is for at top end of 5 speed transmission behind engine? mine is open without a plug etc.

Is that the hole where you can see the flywheel? It is for aiming a stroboscope into, to check timing of the engine.

On a 4 cilinder box, that is.
