Yep, I second what Ash said; and congrats on the whole site Jeroen (and I promise, no more 'TAXI' talk, eh)!

One thing just struck me as odd though; for a site dedicated to German vehicles, I don't think we have any German visitors  ......All users seem to come from everywhere BUT Germany! (esp Aust and Denmark). There must be more German e21 fans out there :?

Cheers
Mathew

Well Germans generally want to speak German ONLY. My 'Deutsch' isn't that good but if I post in English on a German forum, NO ONE will respond. So... in that case, let them just stick to their own forums.

One of the exceptions must be UweM3. Believe he's from Germany or Austria but currently living in the UK. Posts a lot on the BMW CC GB forum in English and visits this place every now and then as well. He got me a much desired oil pan baffle for the 320iS including perfect installation instructions in English!

Hmmm, thats interesting. So UweM3 is our only German visitor then. I think I know what you mean, because I went to one of those 5 series sites you recommended, and most of the site is in German. I didn't go in for membership as they wanted 20EU for that, plus my bank account details over the net; but I did submit my pics (of the e12) for their registry, and the confirmation email I received was in German!

Most other BMW sites are like this. Thats why I like this site. I found another 5er site in my wanderings last week; and there seemed to be a lage section on info about the S. African cars, but it was only in Deutsch! I can't find any info about these cars because all sites dealing with it are on German websites. Here we attract a wide variety of good folks from all over the world, and everyone is helpful! :D

Incidently, I found a fan. I ended up going to a BMW dealer, and though the tools there aren't too helpful, they said the car has an e28 motor. The fans goes in tomorrow, so we'll find out for sure if they were right then! But thanks for your help in this, and with the pics

Cheers

OK I'll try to behave for once!

Keep us posted... I'm absolutely curious... will the fan fit? That would make things a bit clearer.

The SA cars have always been difficult ones... I wouldn't be surprised if the late SA assembled E12's had E28 engines as standard. We had a discussion, I believe on m5board.com, over a car that was supposed to be a SA E28 M5 though the VIN came up as a (M)535i... rumour has it BMW SA ordered 535i's and put the M5 engine in. Strange and I'm still having a hard time believing that.

I'm no 5 series man (though I'd love to have an E28 M5!!!!) but isn't there a 5 series book that tells it all?

Well, this is like a chat room today!!....AND, I'll hold you to your word about behaving yourself

Well, I don't think youre half as curious as I am!...But the guy at BMW told us that if the bit the fan fits onto has 4 bolts, then it is an e28 - or an e28 fan anyway. I was a bit dubious with his decision though, because over the phone he said the car wouldn't require an e12 fan, because e12s stopped being made in 1981, and my car is 1984. But this doesn't explain the presence of an entire e12 body (and the fact that e12s were made in SA until 1985)!!!!....When he checked the motor, I felt more assured though. We'' ll find out tomorrow.

By late assembled SA e12s, do you mean 1980/81 cars that were made late in the e12s' run; or 1981-1985 e12s, made in SA after they were discontinued in the Fatherland? These are confusing cars, and I am a little on edge about finding parts. According to the Haynes manual that came in the car's glovebox, the e12 had L-jet since 1977 (so it must have received EFI with the Porsches), so that is no indication of an e28 engine either.

The Haynes manual isn't too good - firstly as the pics aren't helpful, and secondly as half of it doesn't deal with things inside my car. It seems I'll have to buy an e28 manual as well to make the instructions comprehensible!!
That 5 series book would be very helpful, I think, if I can find and afford it!

I'll keep you posted on the 'Other BMWs' section.

Cheers
Mathew

Well yeah the build year is strange... I don't think the produced shells in SA so they must have had quite a stock... or did they produce the shels there? I don't know.

Still, the water pump or fan doesn't tell you zip... according to the chassis no the green 323i should have the new type fan. But I guess they once put in the old type water pump and fan coupling at the same time... that's why they got me the wrong type of water pump at first... or at least the wrong type for the fan I had...
