FREE 1976 316 IN "GOLF" COLOUR " ITS ALIVE!!

Post by BANANAVAN »

Evening
first off what a great forum!

Right here goes

My neiborough got a new car 10 years ago and drove his 1976 316 into the garage still with 10 months mot on it and there it has stayed until this weekend when he has decided that he needs his garage back!!
The colour of it is bright green! is this colour called "GOLF?"
So I took him a battery round today and tomorrow were going to see if it runs!!! ( last run 5 years ago)

Any pointers before we try and fire it up?
I know the fuel is going to be "off" so its my plan to pipe a Jerry can up to to get it going!

any other pointers?

If told him " i'll take it off his hands if its in his way"

TBH its the colour that makes me want it really oh and the fact its small and rear wheel drive!!!!!! ( i drive a 160bhp vw t4 all day but its no fun!)

I plan ( does anything ever go to plan?) to take it for a mot see what it fails on and just get it through a test and drive it !

I'll get some pics tomorrow when we get it out!

thanks chaps

JIM

before starting it first cheak it has oil in and there are no possible oil leaks from gearbox and diff. cheak brake and clutch pedal work, as clutch can stick to flywheel. lable ignition leads with masking tape or simular, take dystribitor cap off rub contacts with little bit of emmery paper so there clean. take plugs out cheak condition and wire brush. fill the petrol tank up cheak for leakage underneath. with plugs out crank over the engine for about 20 seconds to get oil around engine and hopefully carb float chamber filled. then put plugs in and try to start her make sure she is chocked incase clutch is sticks. hopefully she will start, if not cheak the spark on each cylinder if none, replace ignition leads, plugs, dyribitor cap points, condenser. before taking her for an mot replace discs and pads for new set ebay is cheapest i think. pump brakes make sure hoses dont burst. make sure handbrake works ok. drive up road and do some emergancy stops cheak she brakes straight. also do handbrake stop make sure it works. cheak all lights work. make sure there are no rust holes 30cm away from sills or suspension or subframe or seatbelt mounts. go to mot and hopefully she will go through. o yeah and give her an oil change and new airfilter before mot help to keep emishions down.

you should not have a problem finding dizzy service parts !the points are the same as a early 70,s beetle and the condensor is the same as used on a early mk1 golf . i got my last condensor from halfords and points from euro cars...you might find your local car shop might have parts even if they are listed for other cars(take the old parts with you to compare)....edd...
