Baur top renewal
Baur top renewal
Hi folks! I just got the best phone call in years!! My new top has arrived at Broadoak BMW and I will be picking it up tomorrow!
As you can see in the pic below, the original top is past its prime. A fellow e21 enthusiast and old freind of mine is on his way down from London either friday or sat. to help me change it. I have been asking around for advice, but it seems that not many of us have changed one personaly before so I thought I would take some pics and talk you through our adventure! I hope you get something out of it. I will post pics and updates as we go.

Just an update lads and ladets.....I am not very happy with my local dealership to say the least!
I spent an hour there last week looking at the computer and discussing all I would need for the change. The top came and the new seal for under the back window came and when I looked at it it became obvious that something was missing. While I was assured by the dealer man
that I Didnt need glue...HE LIED!!! A new order for 3 Bond and the front seal are now on their way. There has also been another surprise...there is a strip of vinyl under the seal and over the top that is no longer available.

I spoke with Allon White ( the Morgan guys) and they havent done an e21 top for 12 years or so but will send me a roll of Black vinyl for £8 per meter. I will be measuring up and ordering enough for the strip in the pics as well as the interior cover for the roll bar in order to make it all match.
I'll let you know when the rest of my top
gets here.

Hey,
Did you get new rubber seals also for the soft and hardtop or are you going to use the old one. I was told that most of the rubber seals are no longer available anymore?
Good luck with the black vinyl and let the pictures come please.

Brand new seals from BMW 60 for the bottom one and 50 or so for the soft top to roll bar one. I'm doing the tops one at a time as it is 500 for the rag top and 300 for the targa top(and that is just for the mo hair!)
I am hoping to start soon because I want to paint the metal work but I dont want to start until the bits are all here

Okey then,e21mad wrote:Brand new seals from BMW 60 for the bottom one and 50 or so for the soft top to roll bar one.
Me was told that the bottemseals ( I mean that one where you put the screws through at the softtop near the trunk) is not available anymore??
Glad they are then. Indeed the baurtop renewal is very expensive.

Just a quick update.......
I am likeing my local dealership less and less
Would you beleive that the suposedly discontinued top seal is sitting at the dealership on time and complete but the GLUE THE G>O>D> D>>>@~#*&%"!! GLUE which is used on all convertable tops in still on back order from Germany?????????
UGHHH! There isnt enough exsplatives on this site for what I am feeling. The only saving grace is that the £400 custom cover on the car is keeping the rain out for the time being but I am not best pleased.
As soon as the glue arrives I will get started and the pics will flow. Please be patient as it seems I haver no other choice.
Quick update BMW tells me that Germany is talking to the supplier about the glue. i am looking in other places and i am told the industry standard is 1358 a two process glue. If BMW dont come up with the goods soon i will be ordering the 1358. In the mean time.......... I am making good use of not having a rear window. Big Dan and I have just installed two 525 watt vibe 6x9's in the rear deck. I couldn't do that if the top was in place. My jig saw wouldn't fit otherwise !
Re: Baur top renewal

Re: Baur top renewal
OK well I spent a lot of time on this so Ill post the links anyway:)
So first step was to get the top off and strip the frame. Luckily the frame was in good nick just needs a clean and a respray.

I found that good old petrol was just the trick to remove the old glue. It also worked great at cleaning the brush I used during construction.
