Oooh I have to get in on this one! Our Baur is a w reg 320a. She was born in feb 81. She had 9 owners. The guy I bought it off of was a fast talker and didnt do things to the level I would, but Ill soon fix that! She needs a new top and a full going through before I can put her on the road. This is the first Baur I have ever owned and the second one I have seen in person.

Plans for Winnie (the wife named it):

new top
triple webber carbs
schrick cam
sodium filled valves (if i can find them)
schrick v/springs
High rev rockers allowing 8,000 revs(£600 as i understand)
rebore to 2.7
stroker crank
10:1 pistons
Jacobs electronic ignition
5 speed box
LSD rear
new carpets
fix the fixes in the body work
respray

A tall and exspensive list but after all these years I have decided it is time to sh*t or get off the pot!!

:P

Two things come to mind when I read your post:
- paint the bottom of the front spoiler black
- consider using a different engine block (from E30 325i or 325e) instead of reboring this engine, might be easier?

I know it will be harder my way but....I want an e21 at its best. Not an e21 with an e30 heart. Just my point of veiw no disrespect to those that have modified .....just the vision I have and have had for 20 years. Some day I will follow you guys and put a more (how do I say it) usefull engine in another car. This one is ear marked for my dream and I wont give up till i fly by a newer car at full throttle!

Okey then, here is my story.

I have bought my Baur at the second of december 2008 after a short look at a Dutch site. It had a problem with the engine but it has his M.O.T (in dutch A.P.K) until august 2009 and it was cheap. After a quick look i decided to buy it.

It’s an original TC1 323i Baur with a 5-speed gearbox and some recaro seats . The car was delivered in 1981 to a German dealer in Nurnberg. After a few different owners it has been stored since 2001 and returned back at August 2008. According to the instruments it has had 160.000 km but if this is accurate i do not know.

The ride towards my house was one with a few problems, first it stopped running a few times so that the ANWB ( a dutch carhelpservice) came with three cars and mechanics to find the problem, no good grounding at the ignitionunit. After another 40 kilometers i had no shifting of the gears, the connection between the handle and the gearbox was gone. I repaired this on the road and after totally 8 hours i was home with my first 125 kilometers drive in a BAUR TC1.

The first thing i did at home was replacing the wheels with my 13 inch Alpina’s and it was already a 100% change. After some checking of the engine, compression, valves it seems the basic of the engine was good but there was something else wrong. With help of my E21-friends on the Forum i came to tthe conclusion that two hoses were switched. One from the coldstartinjector and the other from the pressure-regulator were switched. Now it runs perfect.

The next thing is the electrics. One of the previous owners had placed the battery to the back and made a real mess of the wiring, this had to change so i am checking it al out.

After a lot of work the car is in good shape now. Things i already did:

*Engine work: Timingbelt and tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, temp.sensor and a full service.
*Diff of a 320/6.
*New exhaust completly.
*driveshaft refurbished.
*Original interior as the Baur-number describes.
*New bumper at the front and back.
*First Alpina-style wheels and now BBS wheels with new tyres in original setting 185/70/13.
*front suspension bushings are new, trailing arms at the front new.
*As good as new shockabsorbers and springs at the back( came from Jeroen his Baur).

I probably forget alott but this is how the car is now.

For your info: I have the Baur-productionlists. If anyone wants to know something about their Baur or a Baur they saw, just write me at info@bmwbaurtc.nl

And here the pictures from the Baur-meeting last weekend:
Here some pictures of the Baur TC Club treffen last weekend. Only I've forgotten my camera, so took some pictures with my mobile.

What a luck! On the way home, we met this E30 Baur by coincidence!

And almost home!

Oh, and before someone asks what all those caravans were doing there: it was at an old Farm, with a sort of campingside next to it. In the Farm there was a museum for Rosengart-vehicles (French, build from 1928 to 1952).

Well then:
For those who can't read or speak the world languange Dutch, here's a small presentation of my beloved baur.

I bought this BMW in Amsterdam from a person who said it was a perfect example for a quick and small restauration, just some small tiny details and no rust. He'd better say there wasn't any metal left  The result was a body off restauration in 3 years and a budget doubling..
In all the years that I've owned this car I become more and more in love with it. I bought it in 1999 for eur 226,89 (..). (there was no roof and interior left).
This one is imported in 1985 from germany. I don't how many owners and km's it has done. The original engine is gone. When I bought it, it has more speakers then wheels...

At the time that I build this baur up, I had wrecked 5 e21's for spare parts (at that time they were very cheap, You could buy one for less then a sixpack beer..). One very rusty 323 had all the possible options ever delivered. Now they are on my car 8) .
Only the aircon system have I sold seperately.
I also wrecked  one baur for the specific baur (320/6) parts.

I installed (in 5-6 years time, my bankaccount couldn't take this at once :? ):
- Complete new recaro leather interior
- Complete rebuild 323 engine - this one had done aprox 80000 kms.
- 5 speed eco box
- Complete original Simons (from Sweden) exhausts (I love the sound!)
- Power steering
- H&R springs
- Bilstein shocks
- All rubbers are new.
- Alpina rims 15" (6&7J)
- Alpina speedo
- Alpina steeringwheel
- Foglights front
- New front and back bumpers
- Headlamp washers (I like them!)
- Big tool box, complete.
- Chameleon CD player (you don't see it when its off)
- Complete new roof (all 3 parts)

To do/ wish list:
- New chrome details
- New gastank setup
- Gear linkage all new
- Install Alpina footrest

Some pictures:

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

And for Mad ehm Matt: you see, two Jeroen's in one thread already!

There always was a distinction, E21 Jeroen and Baur Jeroen. But nowadays Baur Jeroen writes about E21's as well, and practically lives here, and E21 Jeroen buys a Baur...

I think that Baur-jeroen has to buy at least an e21 (baur), or rename himselve..

No probs...you want to switch your Baur against a nice 4-door saloon?

Wonder how long a E21 lasts when only being used during winter

But if you should see a Jeroen@ a meeting...I'm the younger one ;)

Baur vin help

Post by garyw51 »

I need some advice about a Baur I bought 3 years ago. I live in Sydney (Australia) and bought the car in Melbourne. It has sat in my garage since that time and I am now about to get started on the restoration. The whole car is tired but sound. It has rust in the boot channel at the base of the roof and a few marks around the body. The roof is very good but the perspex window needs to be replaced. Mechanically it is a 323 auto. It is all standard with power steer and air and came with 13" BBS basketweaves. It is Alpine White.
Now to the strange part. It is supposed to be an Australian delivered car but has no compliance plate and the vin number has been removed. VicRoads (Victorian registration authority) have stamped their own number on the car (Shock tower). It has no Baur plate either. The engine number is 7257660 which I assume is the original engine. The VicRoads number is V940084P and was registered as FNT288. The only id on the car is a small strip saying "BMW BUILD DATE June 1982".
My question is: can anyone help with the original BMW VIN and Baur build number?
I am planning to convert the car to manual (I have all the parts) but leave the car otherwise standard.
It currently shares space with my number 1 build Alpina Australia C1, a Motorsport (all1982) and a 1976 320 4 cylinder. So you can see that I do like e21s.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

I think this could be possible if the enginenumber is really your cars vinnumber also.

I believe that de previous poster ( 325ixbaur) will have the means to sort this out.

In some E21 there is also a number in the boot leftside( european cars) or under the dashboard inside. I have the same with my Baur because the original Vinnember is gone and the Dutch RDW stamped a new number in at the shock tower also. I only have the luck that i have my BAURplate.

Good Luck

first start by posting some pictures, also we would like to know the original colour, original interior colour, original windows colour, original roof colour. so it can be checked with the Baur-productions list

in E30's the engine numbers are registered with vin, so the dealer can check wheter an e30 has its original engine.. if thats possible for an e21, dont know
