Oh rav, had a sloppy gearbox before (one of the clips and the rubber mount was broken) which we are gonna sort out and we were converting to a short shifter.

Apparently all is sorted now, plus had the car garaged during this miserable snow and grit so I'm well chuffed.

In the process much a great bunch of guys and gals (tommi, hannah, david, ben, andrew, paul etc) and it's pretty much been a focal point for a bunch of people who love e21's to come together and learn together. I've got many bits of the car sorted to boot too, that's kind of a bonus! That's what being a member on a car enthusiasts forum is all about isn't it?

Tommi's been quality as well, he knows what to do and how to do it, time is obviously an issue sometimes coz he's got his own life to lead and I haven't hassled him either, just been kinda happy with the 'organic' process. We've all learnt along the way (it was the wiring that was the bitch!), got to know eachother etc. So all is good in this particular hood.
Not slating anyone cos job has been done, but its been up and down when its a simple task ......... but all is done now so it got sorted eventually at the end.

right well have got bit further along on the car, the cambelt has been done
Image
found out what the rattling was, and does this cambelt look a little bit smaller
Image
the tensioner was so broke that the belt was flapping around inside the covers and rattling it, it cut a 2 mm deep grove into the aluminium cover, i reckon it was about 500 miles from coming apart completely. good save :)

Image
water pump is all good and it seems to be running like a beaut! need the ol tappets doing now but i havent got a feeler gauge. :(

me ben n dave are gonna crack on with doing the gearbox mount today i thinks, then its all done.

as for short shifter just gonna make one as its cheaper than buying one from bmw. dont know if can do that today though, guys next door are no there so doubt can find a welder today and wanna get it done today

I used a Z3 2.8 Gear shift on my Getrag Dogleg as reccomended by Jimmi and its awesome. My shift is about 2 inch which is superb. It cost about £35 from BMW so a cheap upgrade. Not sure it will work with the standard 323i gearbox, i guess Jimmi could answer that for you.

Why not, only the shift pattern is different.
I have the 2.8 modification too (dogleg) and it's great.

nice, but i think starting a fire in a underground car park isn't such a good idea!

btw, dropping a pile of chrome arch trims on the burning mudflap would also be nice!
