Yep i can help, sort of (don't have a spare parts hord for the E21. Got plenty of E28 M5 parts though!
I share the same unit as Dr Jim so may bump into you if you're heading down at some point to get some parts. Where in Manchester are you?

I definitely see Mobsters point, 316's are fairly easy to come by so you could have found a more sound example with a bit of work, but then you don't gain the satisfaction you would from a thorough resto, and I've seen plenty of cars that "look" sound until you start getting under the surface so in many ways I'd prefer an honest rust included example than a shiny concours looking example, which would need to be sorted again regardless.
Great to see someone trying to keep these old cars on the road irrespective of their condition. Look forward to the updates and I have a pair of front window glasses that I am dying to donate if they're any good to you!
A friend of mine is restoring a 323 this summer. Same thing I guess. He could have bought a tidier example but half the fun for him is the stripping and rebuilding. There's a lot of satisfaction in building your own car.
Morning all! Thanks for the positive comments, Mobster is right in many ways about a solid car but as others have pointed out half the fun is doing the work yourself. Mine was at a friends garage for a while (thats where the pics were taken) and he had it up on the ramp. in his opinion there wasnt much to do and although he didnt mot it he had a good poke around underneath and declared it to be pretty sound. It had new rear bushes i remember including the one(s) that involve dropping the back end off the car. My mate with the garage did that and im sure he would have said if there were any problems. Beyond that I honestly don't know but with what others have sain I'm confident. Jim came up to look at the car but I dont think he saw it on the ramp.
Off to do a bit more this afternoon, prob sorting out the sunroof which had seized up. If anyone has a mechanism that would be grand!

Hey Arshad, for me you hit the nail on the head about knowing what you have got, rust included. I know my car is/was mechanically sound and has lived an easy life. Neither i nor the previous owner ragged the car about and Its still almost totally original, but for the stereo. Cant wait to get back on the road but I wont be rushing the job. The plan is to get it welded up and mot'd then mone onto the paint and finishing aspect. At least its now garaged so it shouldnt deteriorate much more if I get the rot sorted soon.

Hey jacko! You have some very pretty cars there fella! Thank you for the offer of the parts, thats great! I assume youre down near jim (alt?). I'm on the north side in Failsworth. When Jim came up the car was in Moston, just up the road.
Talking of m5's there is a guy in Newton Heath called Terry with a black e28 m5 that I think is off the road. I know him through someone else and remember it was in a lads garage we know and there was the something wrong with the engine. Don't know what the upshot was but I know its sat looking forlorn outside his flat. I could try and make some enquiries if your'e interested?
Be great to meet up and compare cars but it might be a while before mine looks anything like yours! You are more than welcome to come and have a nosey around mine anytime you like, just let me know as its in a friends garage up the road as I dont have a drive/garage.

The sunroof is out at last along with the cables and mechanism which is shot. Its a sad day but I'm gonna have to admit defeat with the sunroof and weld the roof panel into the hole.
Rear light clusters are out ready to repair the rot visible in my avatar.
Bear bumper off and that doesn't look too clever either!:roll:
Brightwork partially off ready to get the glass out.
Front bumper is being a pig to get off (rusted bolts) Front indicators, half grilles and kidneys off, headlamps still in situ (new nearside req).
Indicator bulbs rusted in on both sides!
New o/s/f wing req. (gone at the bottom behind the wheel)
The battery for my DSLR has died so if I can get hold of my old fella's compact i'll get some updated pics.

Hi Jim. Sorry to hear that fella, thats bad news. Do you know of any other suppliers? If you can find one I would be happy to do that with you. I have a friend who regularly works in london/surrey and birmingham....I could ask him to very nicely if he could collect them if its not too far out of his way.....
Re the bumpers, that would be fantastic! Just debating selling my mint Pro One synth to fund the fun and games......I would hate to have to but times are hard for all of us I suppose......unless your'e a banker.....and I know you and I aren't!
